Heritage Tales: Readers share their favorite tournament memories

Geoff Ogilvy signs fan's hat

I have a great story about Geoff Ogilvy. In 2007, I went to the Heritage golf tourney Wednesday to watch pro-am day. I was hanging around hole No. 15, and Geoff came by. I have a U.S. Open hat from Winged Foot Golf Club when he won that tournament in 2006.

As he was walking between No. 15 and No. 16, I asked him if he would sign my hat. He stopped, and I handed him the hat.

No one else had signed it, and as I handed it to him his face lit up, he looked at me, smiled, signed the hat and moved on.

I went (to the tournament) Sunday and was following him. On hole No. 14, which is a par 3 with an elevated tee box, the golfers there were waiting until the green had cleared to hit their shots.

The officials opened the ropes so the gallery could walk to the hole before the pros had hit. As I walked in front of the tee box, I stopped and held up my hat and showed it to Geoff, and he smiled and gave me a big thumbs-up.

Couple streaks across hole No. 16

It was in 1994 when my husband, a new photographer and myself were standing on hole No. 16 of the Heritage Classic when a couple who had disrobed in a home being built came out stark naked and ran across the fairway holding hands.

I could see Greg Norman, who was standing on his drive, when he looked up and saw this.

He hit his club on the ground as he twisted his hat around and sat down laughing. The photographer beside us was a professional and was so startled he did not get any pictures, and that's what he was there for.
