I'm not here to spectate

Beaufort native Mark Anderson grew up dreaming of playing in the Verizon Heritage. By winning the Players Amateur at Belfair last summer, he earned that chance. He is sharing his experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.

I got to the course Monday at about 9:30 in the morning because I wanted to hit some golf balls and get loose. About an hour later, I started playing a round of nine holes by myself. I pretty much zipped through the holes by myself since my goal was to go out and experience the course again and get comfortable for the tournament.

I had been hoping to see the opening ceremonies with Boo Weekley hitting the shot into the Calibogue Sound, but by that time, I was at about the ninth hole, so I couldn't get over there in time.

When I was chipping some shots and practicing, there was still a bit of that "wow" factor in seeing some of the PGA guys out there practicing with me. But at the same time, now that I'm here, I realize that I'm here to play golf and not to spectate, so I'm pretty focused on getting ready for Thursday and, hopefully, playing well.

After I grabbed some lunch and took a break, I thought about playing nine more holes later in the day, but I figured by how the sky looked, it was going to rain pretty bad that evening. So by about three in the afternoon, I said that was enough for me. And of course, those storms did come, but looking back, I think that I got plenty of practice for the first day.
