McIlroy winding down busy stretch in his schedule

Rory McIlroy doesn't know what will happen tomorrow, but he's already got the next weeks planned out after he departs Harbour Town Golf Links.

'The Skinny' from Thursday's first round

WHAT was the scoring average Thursday for the nine former Heritage champs in the field? A shade over par at 71.7. Two-time defending champ Boo Weekley led the way with a 2-under 69, followed closely by Davis Love III and Justin Leonard at 1-under 70.

HOW MANY putts did Lee Janzen need during his round of 6-under-par 65 on Thursday? Only 23, just two more than his career-best for fewest putts in a round. That puts him on an early pace to tie David Frost's all-time 72-hole putting record of 92, set at Harbour Town in 2005.

Beaufort native Mark Anderson grew up dreaming of playing in the Verizon Heritage. By winning the Players Amateur at Belfair last summer, he earned that chance. He is sharing his experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.

With its tree-lined fairways and tiny greens, not to mention the wind that blows off the Calibogue Sound and swirls through the seemingly endless rows of hulking oaks and towering pines, Harbour Town Golf Links tests more than a golfer's skill with a club in his hands.

Mixed bag for local golfers

D.J. Trahan makes ready to putt on No. 8 during Thursday's first round of the Verizon Heritage. Trahan ended the day at even-par.

D.J. Trahan planned on using his accurate drives, precise iron play and knowledge of Harbour Town Golf Links to climb to the top of Thursday's Verizon Heritage leaderboard.

His putter had other ideas.

The former Hilton Head Island High School student and current Mount Pleasant resident saw four birdie attempts run up to, dance around and then pop out of the hole on his way to an even-par 71.

Trahan sits seven strokes back of first-round leader Alex Cejka.

Thompson family has been busy at Harbour Town

Evidently there's not much trash talk going on in the Thompson clan. Even though both his younger brother and sister have already claimed victories at Harbour Town Golf Links this year, Nicholas Thompson says there weren't any digs from his siblings as he prepared for this week's Verizon Heritage.

Heritage Tales: Readers share their favorite tournament memories

Geoff Ogilvy signs fan's hat

I have a great story about Geoff Ogilvy. In 2007, I went to the Heritage golf tourney Wednesday to watch pro-am day. I was hanging around hole No. 15, and Geoff came by. I have a U.S. Open hat from Winged Foot Golf Club when he won that tournament in 2006.

As he was walking between No. 15 and No. 16, I asked him if he would sign my hat. He stopped, and I handed him the hat.

No one else had signed it, and as I handed it to him his face lit up, he looked at me, smiled, signed the hat and moved on.

Dye drops in for pro-am at his Harbour Town creation

More than 40 years ago, up-and-coming golf course designer Pete Dye decided to change things up. Instead of routing the 18th hole of his Harbour Town Golf Links course back to the clubhouse, Dye plopped it next to the shallow waters of the Calibogue Sound.
