A lack of sleep, but not lacking in fun

Patsy Weekley, the mother of two-time defending Verizon Heritage champion Boo Weekley, will be following her son around Harbour Town Golf Links this week. She is sharing her experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.I woke up in the middle of the night last night and had a hard time getting back to sleep, so I watched the Golf Channel for a little bit and saw Boo on "Inside the PGA Tour," so that was kind of neat.Today was a fun day, because it's always nice to watch Boo play here.

Need to get putter working to make 2nd-round charge

Beaufort native Mark Anderson grew up dreaming of playing in the Verizon Heritage. By winning the Players Amateur at Belfair last summer, he earned that chance. He is sharing his experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.I prepared the same way (Thursday) that I do every day. I came out about an hour and a half early and putted and chipped, and then hit some balls on the driving range. When I got to my first hole (No. 10), it was fun. I was excited. I was pumped up, and I hit a good drive. Once I got out there playing, I was fine.

Stewart Cink tees off at the first tee during the first day of the Verizon Heritage tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links on April 16, 2009. Cink finished the day one over par.

Stewart Cink hit up Mellow Mushroom for some trivia before Bible study Wednesday, then made a run to Starbucks, did some grocery shopping and hit the pharmacy for some allergy medication before his 1:10 p.m. tee time Thursday.

The yachters come through at the last minute and fill Harbour Town slips

With six slips that hadn't been rented, this year could have been the first in recent memory that the Harbour Town Yacht Basin wouldn't be filled with yachts for the Verizon Heritage.

But then a few last-minute bookings came in, filling nearly all 100 spaces. It was a bright spot for the PGA Tour event, which has been struggling in this tough economic climate with slower ticket sales and a diminished corporate presence.

"We're pretty busy," said harbormaster Nancy Cappelman on Thursday. "We still had some slips available early in the week, but I think we're just about sold out now."

Alex Cejka has been patiently waiting for his luck to turn at some point. But of all places for it to change, he couldn't have expected it to be at the Verizon Heritage, the site of one of the most unlucky events of his career.

Four years ago, Cejka was disqualified at Harbour Town Golf Links for mistakenly playing a non-conforming ball in the third round of the tournament. Coincidence or not, he hasn't been back since.

Until Thursday, that is.
