Early wake-up call lights fire in Gainey

Tommy Gainey often looks for a shot to propel his round, just something to get him going. The earlier, the better, he says.

He found one on the first hole during Friday morning's second round of the Verizon Heritage. And it came in most unusual fashion -- a missed putt.

The Skinny

WHAT was Jerry Kelly's score Friday on the 10th hole? The Wisconsin native made a 10 on the 571-yard, par-5 before withdrawing due to an illness.

WHEN was the last time a defending champion missed the cut at the Heritage? Every defending champion since 1993 has made it to the weekend. Davis Love III missed the cut that year to end his run of consecutive titles.

WHAT club did Tommy Armour III use Friday to secure a hole in one? He wielded an 8-iron to ace the 163-yard seventh hole.

HOW many putts did it take Boo Weekley to finish the par-4 ninth?

We're itchin' for a weekend surge

Patsy Weekley, the mother of two-time defending Verizon Heritage champion Boo Weekley, will be following her son around Harbour Town Golf Links this week. She is sharing her experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary. It was kind of a tough day for Boo, shooting 4 over on the front nine, but he was able to pull it together on the back nine and play better. For a while there, it was pretty scary for me, and I'm sure his stomach was flipping, too.I actually wasn't there on No.

Friday's Heritage Notebook

From staff reports

In winning consecutive Verizon Heritage, Boo Weekley has made some birdie runs at Harbour Town Golf Links, and he needed one on the back nine Friday to keep his dream of winning three consecutive tartan jackets alive.

After shooting 4 over par on the front nine during the second round, Weekley made three birdies on the back to get to 1 under for the tournament, leaving him tied for 27th place.

"I was glad I made the cut to be able to stay for the weekend," Weekley said.

'69 tourney fan: Friend of Palmer, Coppedge

In 1969, we had been anticipating the professional golf tournament to be played on Hilton Head Island. We had a villa at the 18th green on the Ocean Course. The belief was that the tournament would be on this course because the Harbour Town course was not expected to be complete by the start -- Thanksgiving weekend 1969. My brother-in-law was very much of the opinion that Sea Pines could not deliver the course on time.

I arrived Wednesday.

The Skinny from Thursday's first round

WHAT was the scoring average Thursday for the nine former Heritage champs in the field? A shade over par at 71.7. Two-time defending champ Boo Weekley led the way with a 2-under 69, followed closely by Davis Love III and Justin Leonard at 1-under 70.

HOW MANY putts did Lee Janzen need during his round of 6-under-par 65 on Thursday? Only 23, just two more than his career-best for fewest putts in a round. That puts him on an early pace to tie David Frost's all-time 72-hole putting record of 92, set at Harbour Town in 2005.
