Sunday tee times

Tee times for the third round of the 2009 Verizon Heritage today and Friday at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.

Heritage isn't big on wire-to-wire winners

Alex Cejka lines up a putt on the ninth green during the second round of the Verizon Heritage. Cejka, out front after Day 1, gave up the lead after an even-par 71 on Friday. That means the Heritage won’t have a wire-to-wire winner for the 12th straight year.

By Alex Cejka's estimation, Tiger Woods is probably the only golfer who actually enjoys holding the first-day lead at a PGA Tour event.

Not that Cejka wasn't fortunate to be sitting atop the leaderboard entering Friday's second round at the Verizon Heritage.

From staff reports

In winning consecutive Verizon Heritage, Boo Weekley has made some birdie runs at Harbour Town Golf Links, and he needed one on the back nine Friday to keep his dream of winning three consecutive tartan jackets alive.

After shooting 4 over par on the front nine during the second round, Weekley made three birdies on the back to get to 1 under for the tournament, leaving him tied for 27th place.

"I was glad I made the cut to be able to stay for the weekend," Weekley said.

Fresh off a bogey-free round of 5-under-par 66 and a shot ahead of the field, Todd Hamilton sat in the interview room at Harbour Town Golf Links on Friday and ticked off the things that went well for him during the second round of the Verizon Heritage -- driving, chipping, pitching, bunker play, putting ...

Second day goes Gay’s way

Brian Gay takes a minute to study his putt on the 9th green during the second round of the Verizon Heritage at the Harbour Town Golf Links Friday afternoon.

It took 293 starts before Brian Gay claimed his first PGA Tour victory. His second may come much quicker.

Gay shot a 5-under-par 66 on Friday to take the lead after the second round of the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Davis Love III hasn't been particularly happy with his performance over the last couple months.

He spent much of his time concentrating on finding a way to return to the Masters after missing that major championship last year for the first time since 1990 -- a bid that eventually proved unsuccessful.

With nothing to lose, it was time to get aggressive

Beaufort native Mark Anderson grew up dreaming of playing in the Verizon Heritage. By winning the Players Amateur at Belfair last summer, he earned that chance. He is sharing his experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.

I had a lot of fun out there. My caddie and I were laughing together the whole time, so that was nice. I had a great gathering and a lot of support from my family and friends, who I can't thank enough for coming out here. We'll just have to get 'em the next time.

I hit it in the water on No.
