Front side could hold key today

The Masters, as the saying goes, does not begin until the back nine on Sunday. But the 2009 Verizon Heritage could very well be won on the front.

Payne Stewart will never be forgotten at Harbour Town

The stoic Steve Wilmot -- a bear of a man even when he's wearing a tartan jacket -- found himself getting misty eyed.

By Patsy Weekley

Patsy Weekley, the mother of two-time defending Verizon Heritage champion Boo Weekley, will be following her son around Harbour Town Golf Links this week. She is sharing her experience with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette with a daily Heritage diary.

Well, Boo isn't going to be in the final group on Sunday this time, but it was still a wonderful day. This is just such a fantastic tournament.

Fitness follows tour everywhere it goes

Stewart Cink (at right) is stretched out by Chris Noss on Saturday inside a PGA Tour trailer converted into a fitness room.

Stephen Leaney posted a 1-over-par 72 in the third round of the Verizon Heritage, but emerged from the fitness trailer located near the Harbour Town Golf Links as if he had fired a 65. A quick 10-minute stretch does that.

"The way the game's going, it's probably one of the most important things we have on tour," Leaney said.

The final hours of the First Age of Boo are upon us.

Barring the most shocking turn of Boo Weekley's two-year tenure in tartan, someone else will slip into that fancy plaid jacket this evening.

Tracking the local golfers

In Friday's second round, Tommy Gainey posted the best round of his short Verizon Heritage career. Gainey, the leader of golfers with South Carolina ties heading into the third round, wasn't able to repeat the performance Saturday, posting a 2-over 73.

Gainey, who is from Bishopville, had an eventful front nine holes that included two birdies and four bogeys. The round dropped him into a tie for 41st place heading into today's final round.

The third-round skinny

HOW MANY of the past 13 outright leaders after the third round of the Heritage have gone on to win? Eight. But third-round leaders have had better luck this season on the PGA Tour, winning 12 of 15 events.

WHAT statistical categories does Tim Wilkinson lead after three rounds? Driving accuracy (39 of 42 fairways hit), total putts (70) and sand saves (9 of 9).

WHICH former Heritage champion is highest on the leaderboard going into today's final round?

Heritage nights: Of guitars, yachts and a man with really big bunny ears

"12 dollars,"my bartender said with a good-natured smile as he slid over my complete order of precisely two beers -- an upmarket vintage import known stateside as "Bud Light" -- and wittily I replied, "Blerph?"

Heritage communications system has a history of helping those in need

Nestled between the fifteen and sixteenth holes of the Harbour Town Golf Links is a communications trailer where those attending the Verizon Heritage can make complimentary international phone calls, use the Internet and get in touch with friends they've lost along the course.

'Radio' Kennedy helps us tune in the joy of life

"Radio" has been on a different frequency all his life.

That's what everyone calls James Robert Kennedy, 62, of "The Electric City" of Anderson in Upstate South Carolina. As long as anyone can remember, he held a transistor radio to his ear.
