Heritage Tales: Readers share their favorite tournament memories

Landing a hole in one wins pot of gold

One of my great memories was acing the third hole at Wexford Plantation on March 10, 2001. The hole, 142 yards; club used, a six iron. We were living at Wexford then. On March 9, I returned late from a trip to Atlanta. I was a late entry for the usual Saturday morning Men's Day. The custom then was for all players every Saturday to toss in a dollar and watch the pot grow waiting for someone to claim the prize.

After making the hole-in-one, Fred Petrini, one of the players in the foursome, yelled "It's in the hole!" Then he took his cart and raced over to his home opposite hole No. 3. He called the pro shop to let them know of my feat; "first in the winner," and thus the pot of gold was mine. Word spread through Wexford, and I proudly followed the tradition by buying a drink for everyone in the clubhouse -- women, men and guests. It was well worth it!

Though no longer living at Wexford, I still have a handsome plaque on the wall in our home office. Now at age 78, it means more than ever.

Payne Stewart throws lucky ball into lagoon

As a marshal, I was walking with Corey Pavin and five amateurs. Because I volunteered for 11 years, I do not recall the hole, but I do remember what transpired. On a par 3, Pavin made a hole in one!

Payne Stewart, waiting on the hole ahead, ran to the green and tossed the ball into a lagoon. Pavin yelled, "Payne, I always save those balls."
