1959 -- Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser plans first golf course on Hilton Head Island.
1968 -- Sea Pines announces plans for first Heritage Classic, to be held Thanksgiving Day on the resort's Ocean Course. Weeks later, plans are delayed for one year so tournament can be played on yet-to-be-completed Harbour Town Golf Links.
1969 -- Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus complete Harbour Town just as first Heritage is set to be played. Arnold Palmer wins the tournament -- his first victory in 14 months.
1971 -- "Heritage Classic" become "Sea Pines Heritage Classic."
1973 -- Heritage played in September for the first time.
1974 -- Heritage played in March for first time.
1975 -- Jack Nicklaus finally wins on the course he helped to design.
1977 -- Harbour Town has first major facelift as new tee boxes are added to holes No. 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 15 and 18.
1980 -- Doug Tewell wins first Heritage playoff, edging Jerry Pate.
1983 -- Heritage moved to April, first week after Masters.
1985 -- Bernhard Langer becomes the first, and thus far the only, golfer to win Heritage a week after winning the Masters.
1986 -- Sea Pines Company declares bankruptcy.
1987 -- "Sea Pines Heritage Classic" becomes "MCI Heritage Classic."
1988 -- Greg Norman dedicates his come-from-behind victory to 17-year-old leukemia victim Jamie Hutton.
1989 -- Harbour Town gets facelift with four greens redesigned and teeing grounds enlarged. Later that year, the course plays host to the PGA Tour's season-ending Nabisco Championships, won by Tom Kite in a playoff over Payne Stewart.
1990 -- Stewart becomes first Heritage champion to successfully defend his title.
1994 -- David Frost shoots a 61 to establish single-round tournament scoring record. Hale Irwin joins Davis Love III as the event's only three-time winner.
1995 -- "MCI Heritage Classic" becomes "The MCI Classic -- The Heritage of Golf."
1996 -- Loren Roberts' 265 sets a tournament scoring record.
1998 -- Davis Love III wins unprecedented fourth Heritage.
2000 -- Pete Dye oversees $3.3 million restoration of Harbour Town.
2001 -- "The MCI Classic -- The Heritage of Golf" becomes "The WorldCom Classic -- The Heritage of Golf."
2001 -- Jose Coceres becomes only the second Argentine player to win a PGA Tour event when he defeats Billy Mayfair in a Monday-morning playoff to capture the 2001 WorldCom Classic.
2002 -- Sea Pines founder and Heritage pioneer Charles Fraser is killed in a boating accident in the Caribbean on Dec. 15.
2003 -- The tournament reconnects with title sponsor MCI to become "The MCI Heritage."
2003 -- Davis Love III defeats Woody Austin in a four-hole playoff to collect his record fifth Heritage championship.
2006 -- Tournament name is changed again. The 2006 tournament is the Verizon Heritage.
