This Week in Golf - May 15th through May 18th

His first career victory came at the 2004 AT&T Classic, which was then called the BellSouth Classic. Johnson was the fourth player to make the event his first PGA Tour win.

Phil Mickelson, who was the two-time defending champion heading into last year's AT&T, won't be in the field this week -- a pattern repeated by most of the world top 25.

No. 15 Stewart Cink is the highest-ranked player in the field, followed by Johnson at No. 22. They are the only players in the top 25 who will be at Sugarloaf this week.

Retief Goosen, the 2002 champion and world No. 30, will be in the field, as will former world No. 1 Greg Norman in a rare start.

The Golf Channel will have coverage on Thursday and Friday, with CBS taking over for the weekend. Each broadcast will be from 3-6 p.m. (et). Next week's event is the Colonial, where Rory Sabbatini defeated Jim Furyk and Bernhard Langer in a playoff last year.

EUROPEAN TOUR

IRISH OPEN, Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort, Limerick, Ireland - Padraig Harrington held on to beat Bradley Dredge in a playoff at last year's Irish Open, becoming the first Irishman in 25 years to win the European Tour's biggest event on the Emerald Isle.

"I've always said that after the four majors this is the next event I've wanted to win," Harrington said -- and then he went on to win his first major at the British Open.

Harrington will be back this year to defend his title in a field that includes four Irishman who have already won on the European Tour this season: Graeme McDowell, Damien McGrane, Darren Clarke and Peter Lawrie.

Three-time champion Colin Montgomerie will also be in the field, along with fellow previous winners Stephen Dodd, Patrick Sjoland and David Carter.

The Golf Channel will have three hours of coverage for all four rounds. Next week is the BMW PGA Championship, where Anders Hansen won last year.

LPGA TOUR

SYBASE CLASSIC, Upper Montclair Country Club, Clifton, New Jersey - Lorena Ochoa carded four rounds in the 60s last year to win the Sybase Classic by three shots over Sarah Lee.

It was the second of Ochoa's eight 2007 victories and the first time she successfully defended a title on the LPGA Tour. This week, the Mexican star will be looking to become the first three-time winner in tournament history.

So will two other players.

Annika Sorenstam and Sherri Steinhauer have also won the event two times apiece. Sorenstam is coming off a victory at the Michelob Ultra Open last week, the first time in five tries this season she won with Ochoa in the field.

The two top players in the women's world rankings have combined for eight wins already this season (Ochoa 5, Sorenstam 3). Paula Creamer, who has won twice this season, will not be in the field.

ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of coverage for the last three rounds. Next week is the LPGA Corning Classic, which was won by Young Kim last year.

CHAMPIONS TOUR

REGIONS CHARITY CLASSIC, Robert Trent Jones Trail at Ross Bridge, Hoover, Alabama - Brad Bryant beat R.W. Eaks with a birdie on the third playoff hole last year to successfully defend his title at the Regions Charity Classic.

Both players closed with 65s on Sunday to end at 12-under 204, just one shot ahead of Tom Kite and Denis Watson. But it was Bryant who went on to become the first two-time winner in tournament history.

The Golf Channel will have tape-delayed coverage of all three rounds this year beginning at 6:30 p.m. (et).

Next week is the first major of the season for the Champions Tour, the Senior PGA Championship, where Watson, from Zimbabwe, became the first player born outside the United States to win the tournament since South Africa's Gary Player in 1990.

NATIONWIDE TOUR

BMW CHARITY PRO-AM, Thornblade Club, The Carolina Country Club and Bright's Creek Golf Club, South Carolina and North Carolina - Nick Flanagan won the BMW Charity Pro-Am last season for his second victory in as many starts.

Flanagan birdied his last three holes to beat Nicholas Thompson by a shot. He eventually claimed a third win to get the "battlefield promotion" to the PGA Tour.

This event is unique in that the contestants will play all three courses the first three days with the final round to be played on the host course, Thornblade Club.

The Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds beginning at 1 p.m. (et) each day. Next week is the Melwood Prince George's County Open, where Paul Claxton won last year.

CANADIAN TOUR

IBEROSTAR RIVIERA MAYA OPEN, Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club, Riviera Maya, Mexico - The Canadian Tour returns from a two-week break for the Iberostar Riviera Maya Open, its fourth event of the 2008 season and the second-straight in Mexico.

Spencer Levin shot a final-round 65 last year to beat Derek Gillespie by a shot and claim his first Canadian Tour title. Levin had shared medalist honors at Q-school earlier in the year.

Next week is the La Loma Classic, a new event on the schedule. The Canadian Tour will then take another week off before Spring Qualifying School begins on June 5.
